For any shopping that costs more than this, you\u2019d have to do it the old fashioned way, inserting your card and entering your PIN number.<\/p>\n<p>The second limit is all to do with the number of contactless<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/14\/monzo-customers-given-option-undo-payments-industry-first-23083262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> payments<\/a> an individual can make without using an additional form of authentication. Currently this sits at either a cumulative total of \u00a3300 across several contactless transactions, or no more than five consecutive contactless payments. Once you hit the \u00a3300 mark or make five consecutive payments, you\u2019ll once again be asked to use a chip and PIN machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, a huge shake-up might be in the works that could change the way we pay at <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/08\/major-change-coming-supermarket-checkouts-tesco-already-trialing-22869555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">checkouts across the UK.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23091437 lazyload\" alt=\"Wireless payment in cafe.\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/originalholdum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-1346366693.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>85% of people in the UK make a contactless payment at least once a month (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changes to contactless payments are being considered?<\/h2>\n<p>In a bid to boost the economy, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is currently reviewing contactless limits to see if we can improve the UK\u2019s payment system and bring it in line with the US, where there is no fixed limit.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it asked consumers to provide feedback about the restrictions imposed on these types of payments.<\/p>\n<p>The consultation has since concluded (ending on May 9, 2025) and several options are now being deliberated as they go through the public\u2019s responses. This includes<strong> the possibility of increasing the contactless cap to \u00a3200 (or possibly even higher) or axing it completely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The FCA is also considering introducing a brand new risk-based exemption <\/strong>for in-person providers which would give <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/12\/major-uk-bank-used-millions-hike-account-fees-within-weeks-23068808\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banks <\/a>and payment providers more ability to set their own contactless payment limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is already the case with the likes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a>\u00a0Pay and Google Pay, which have no limit in the UK (although retailers can impose their own limits on these).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23091449 lazyload\" alt=\"Contactless payment on holidays\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/originalholdum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-1511201771.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>The limits to contactless payments might soon change (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there any potential issues with scrapping contactless limits?<\/h2>\n<p>There is one big concern to keep in mind when it comes to any potential changes to contactles payments \u2013 <strong>fraud.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fraud is one of the main pitfalls of contactless transactions, as criminals and unauthorised users are often able to make payments using lost or stolen cars without PINs. <\/p>\n<p>Last year alone, contactless fraud accounted for an eye-watering loss of \u00a341.5million in the UK.<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text\">Do you support raising or removing the contactless payment cap?
