A NIN is necessary to make sure the correct amount of tax is deducted from your earnings. For example, QQ123456B.<\/p>\n<p>For those aged 16 to 19 <em>without <\/em>one, the <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-government\/\">Government<\/a> website recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-national-insurance-number\/how-to-apply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">applying online<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When do you start paying National Insurance? <\/h2>\n<p>You start paying for National Insurance (NI) if you\u2019re\u00a0over 16 years old and earning or receiving self-employed profits over a certain amount.<\/p>\n<p>You have to pay mandatory NI if you are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An employee earning above \u00a3242 a week from one job<\/li>\n<li>Self-employed and making a profit of \u00a312,570 a year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NI goes towards funding public services like the NHS, pension schemes, unemployment benefits and sickness and <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/disability\/\">disability<\/a> allowances.<\/p>\n<p>If you are paid through a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, NI contributions are automatically deducted from your salary, so you won\u2019t need to do anything to ensure you\u2019re paying it.<\/p>\n<p>You should see your NI contribution deducted from your pay cheque.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re self-employed, then your NI contributions will be calculated based on your <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/01\/18\/self-assessment-tax-return-how-to-complete-it-as-deadline-approaches-13920853\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/01\/18\/self-assessment-tax-return-how-to-complete-it-as-deadline-approaches-13920853\/\">Self Assessment tax return<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When do you stop paying National Insurance?<\/h2>\n<p>As per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tax-national-insurance-after-state-pension-age\/stopping-paying-national-insurance\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tax-national-insurance-after-state-pension-age\/stopping-paying-national-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Government website<\/a>, you stop making NI payments from 6 April (start of the tax year) after you reach State Pension age, which is currently 66.<\/p>\n<p>You do not pay NI after 66 \u2013 unless you\u2019re self-employed and pay Class 4 contributions (meaning your profits are more than \u00a312,570 a year).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23017381 lazyload\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/originalholdum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-557715963-495d.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>Depending on your employment status, your National Insurance contributions may be different (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much National Insurance do you pay? <\/h2>\n<p>The amount of NI you pay depends on your employment status and how much you earn.<\/p>\n<p>Employers also pay NI at a different rate, based on the earnings of their employees.<\/p>\n<p>As for how much you pay exactly, let\u2019s break it down. From <strong>6 April 2025 <\/strong>to<strong> 5 April 2026<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/23003127\" data-secret=\"iDmm66gEd6\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u2022 If you\u2019re employed:<\/strong> Employed people pay Class 1 NI. If you earn \u00a3242 to \u00a3967 a week (\u00a31,048 to \u00a34,189 a month), your rate is 8%. If you earn more than \u00a3967 per week (\u00a34,189 a month), it\u2019s an additional 2%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 If you\u2019re self-employed: <\/strong>Self-employed people who make over \u00a312,570 a year pay Class 4 NI. If your profits are \u00a36,845 or more, your Class 2 contributions are treated as having been paid to protect your NI record. If your profits are less than \u00a36,725 a year, you do not have to pay anything but you can choose to pay voluntary Class 2 contributions. Most people pay via Self Assessment, but how much you contribute depends on your profits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 If you\u2019re employed and self-employed: <\/strong>Many people fall into both categories. This means your employer will deduct your Class 1 NI from your wages, while you may have to pay Class 4 for any self-employed work. How much you pay depends on the combined wages.
