href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/09\/major-energy-company-offering-two-hours-free-a-week-help-lower-bills-23055961\/\">energy suppliers<\/a> are paying customers \u00a37 million in refunds after overcharging them for five years.<\/p>\n<p>More than 34,000 customers across the UK with at least two electricity meters in the property overpaid <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/31\/save-household-bills-prices-sky-rocket-less-24-hours-22810848\/\">their bills<\/a> between 2019 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Ofgem said customers were \u2018erroneously charged more than is allowed under the price cap when combined with unit rates\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>After investigating the issue, suppliers agreed to issue \u00a35 million in refunds and \u00a31.4 million in goodwill payments. <\/p>\n<p>Octopus Energy had 20,862 most customers affected, and will pay out \u00a32.6 million in total refunds. <\/p>\n<p>Eon Next, Ecotricity, EDF, Outfox the Market, Ovo Energy, Rebel Energy, So Energy, Tru Energy and Utility Warehouse are also issuing refunds. <\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" \u00a32,043,098.84\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Total goodwill payments \u2013 \u00a3453,960.00\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Charlotte Friel, director of retail pricing and systems at Ofgem, said: \u2018We expect all suppliers to have robust processes in place so they can bill their customers accurately.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018While it\u2019s clear that on this occasion errors were made, thankfully, the issues were promptly resolved, and customers are being refunded.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Today\u2019s outcome serves as a reminder to all energy suppliers that they must implement the price cap properly and do their due diligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It also shows that, where appropriate, Ofgem is prepared to work with suppliers that fail to comply with our rules.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is eligible to get a refund? <\/h2>\n<p>Affected customers will be refunded automatically. <\/p>\n<p>If customers have since changed supplier, they will be contacted by their previous company to arrange a refund. <\/p>\n<p>Rebel Energy, which closed last month and left 90,000 homes without a supplier, will be refunded. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><strong><strong>Get
